Engine gasket set for ZTS

Postby KoWilliamsZTS » Tue May 19, 2020 6:50 am

Hi all

I have a late 1940 ZTS and I’m in need of a complete gasket set for the engine. I’m based in the UK so my best bet over here is ordering the complete set that Steiner’s sell on their website, I’d just like to double check that the set they provide will indeed match the engine on my ZTS. It says on their website that the set will fit the 165 and 206 engines, truth be told I’m not 100% sure on which mine would have, as part of me thinks it has the 185!? Upon visual inspection I would say that all the gaskets in their set look identical to the ones on my engine, but I need clarification if possible please.

The engine serial No: 53954

And the link to Steiner’s gasket set: https://www.steinertractor.com/MMS2363- ... haft-seals

Thanks in advance

The gasket set appears to be for the early series engine, I'd go with it

Do you really need the full set? Fel Pro has a "head set" for $50.00 that has better head gaskets

Hi John

Right this moment I only need the head gasket set, but living over in the UK makes shipping parts from the US extortionate unfortunately, so I may as well get it all in one hit.

Do you have any idea if the earlier engine like mine is a 165/206 by any chance?

You say it's a ZTS, it would be a 186, ZAS would be 206, 165 was used in the R series only. Of course never say never when it comes to what Moline did.206 has a center main bearing, 186 has a "follower" to pass along the oil pressure, no supporting center main bearing. I got my head set from NAPA, it's a Fel Pro brand gasket set. figured you may have that brand over there,I can get you a number when I go to the shop if that will help.

Just rebuilding a 1939 ZTS. Make most of my own gaskets. Head gaskets usually can be reused if not torn. Back in the day all were reused.

The gasket is beyond reusing sadly as it’s leaking water into the oil in all sorts of places via the gasket itself. I get the impression it’s been there a very long time!

The Fel-Pro head set is HS7625B, I got it thru NAPA in 1 day, $51.00, has the "good" head gaskets in it.

Thank you for your help John I’ll certainly look into it!

Can I just ask what the issue is with the Steiner set in comparison to the Fel Pro?

The Fel-Pro gasket has metal rings around the cylinder holes and some other important parts, I'm not able to post pictures on this site, but if you'd like to message me at 1-847-309-7347 I can provide pictures that show the difference. If that doesn't work for you, I'm on Facebook too, or my email is grandfieldfarm@att.net

Fel pro has gasket material in bulk to make head gaskets. Have made many for older Twin City stuff with good results. Also used on 206 diesels for block gaskets.
Not easy to work with as has metal in layers. I use a common hole punch set. Hard on hands to cut. Am sure Z/R or whatever could be made with it. Some of us in remote locations have to make our own!
