A4T-1600 Prototype

Postby JimHaugen » Fri Jun 05, 2020 12:15 pm

In 1970, I was an employee at the engine dyno lab at the lake street plant in Minneapolis. MM also did winter testing in Buckeye, Arizona at the time. We had an A4T-1600, one of the first units built, in addition to some other equipment, on test out there and I was able to spend a few weeks there before we brought it back for evaluation. I had the opportunity while there to drive the tractor and to bring it back to Buckeye to load it on the truck for return to Minnesota.

Because of the turmoil at MM, Oliver and White, the Lake St. plant was closing and production was moving to Charles City. I left MM in early 1972. This A4T was eventually sold off and ended up in some fellows shed. I don't know the exact history but the remains were acquired a few years ago by an individual from southern Minnesota to be restored. He searched for info on the tractor and through some posts and pictures I had made he called me about it. He and I and others have compared notes and are 100% sure this is the same tractor. He even found some very fine Arizona dust in an area of the machine!

Little did I know 50 years ago, that same tractor would show up again. Maybe some day, if I get back to Minnesota, he will let me drive it again! When I can work out how to upload pictures, I plan to do that, pictures from then and now.

See some of the restored pictures below.

No, this one was the original version, same as the early production model. I think the one you might be thinking about might be the current "A4T-1900" built recently by Mike Verhulst and others featured in some you-tube videos. I think it also has the 800 cu. in. engine. That is all I know about it.

I knew of Mike at MM, I just don't recall any contact with him.

Wish there was concrete information on the 1400's. Have an original with 504 and turbo. Some say turbo were added at dealers.

After 50 some years, as I recall, the turbo kits for the 504 were first intended for altitude compensation only. This was for the G series tractor primarily. The Lanova system is not really a good chamber for turbocharging. I recall hearing rumors of some good increase in power but it was never verified in our lab, even though we could have done it by simulating higher altitude. Seems the 451 would be the same.

I do not recall the 1400's with turbo but it would not surprise me if it was done. I seem to recall some 1600's going out with the 800 cu. in. LP.

With turbo had turftied cam. Modded injection pump. 504 was pushed to 139 hp. Lanova system doesn't respond well with turbo. Maybe 10 hp gain.
